A Certain Scientific Railgun Seasons 1 and 2
What is it?
A Certain Scientific Railgun takes place in the same world and city as A Certain Magical Index but focuses on the character of Misaka, Railgun, Mikoto and her friends. Touma, the main character of Index, has only cursory appearances in the series with his major moment being in season two as it is the same events seen in his own series helping Misaka when saving her clones. The series is action filled with comedy beats interspersed throughout. The magical side of Index is gone from the series as Misaka has nothing to do with them instead it focuses on the crazy things that she can do and the problems only the esper powers can deal with.
How did I find it?
Railgun is actually how I found Index, I was listening to music using Youtube and an amv came on that I thought looked cool. I did a bit of googling to try and figure out what it was before finally figuring out the relationship the two series had.
What do I think of it?
Honestly I like Railgun a lot more than Index. The consistent cast of characters gives it a strength lacking in Index. In addition Touma works much better as a side character than as a series lead. I love how it is able to refer to Index without trying to shoehorn Misaka into problems she wasn't originally involved in. There is a line in the series from Miss Komoe about how a student destroyed her room and while in Railgun alone this is a throwaway line if you've seen both you know what event she is referring to. I also really like that you can put the two series into a time line that actually works. I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment of Railgun as the characters are great fun and the world entertaining.
