Rail Shooter

Episode 144: Do a Meme-O-Roll! [Star Fox 64]

Words cannot describe the feeling of shooting a giant floating brain's eye out of the air while taking advice from your ghost father through an interstellar comms system.  Mostly because that's really bizarre.  Take revengeance on all those guys who stole your trademarked company name, and help all the Star citizens return to the rightful place of peace and... exiling scientists?  To other planets?

Show Notes

(01:00) This marks Alex's 5th episode (6 including Sonic), meaning she's appeared on over 3% of them!

(03:30) Thanks, Ryan!

(04:00) Splash!

(05:50) Both Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing are getting phone games.  The Layton excursion was pretty decent, though not very Layton.

(06:30) 20XX! It's so good.  If you like Mega Man X, play this game.  Despite what's said here, boss powers are pretty useful, and there are weaknesses to exploit.  Tyler beat the game for the first time because of this since recording.

(07:30) Anime?!

(09:00) In case you forgot about other Rogue-likes, Rogue Legacy is still great.  And so is the music.

(11:00) Never heard a Mega Man X boss intro?

(14:00) Some of us watch CGP Grey.

(18:30) Coffee and Cthulhu.

(21:00) Know how to farm friendship.

(24:00) In case you're wondering what Geremy's opinion about Star Fox Zero is.

(26:00) Sweet gift bags?

(28:00) Ryan got one of these.

(30:30) That's not a thing.

(33:00) Always be chargin'.

(35:00) Terrible pilots, or alter-verse nomenclature?  You decide!

(40:00) EXPLOSIONS!

(55:00) For the curious, it turns out Golden Axe came out 4 years after the first Gauntlet.  Also, rankings!

(58:00) Watch us shoot cars?

Next time on Last Time, something awesome this way comes!

Yeah!  We're excited, too!

Episode 135: Weaponized Evangelion [Sin And Punishment]

Never before have ruffians been so... rough.  Inhuman, even.  That's, alright, though, because this horrible dystopia featuring livestock (‽) become a hivemind of rampaging monsters, paramilitary groups oppressing the citizens they're protecting from the hordes, and a city literally filling with an ocean of blood is all just a training exercise for our protagonist.  What I've just described, though, sounds like some cross of Silent Hill and Metal Gear, which sounds great.  Do a barrel dodge!

Division of labor: one person downloads, but the other person navigates.

Show Notes

(01:30) Turns out Tyler's Japanese is terrible.

(12:00) Apparently we're not the only ones who like Absol.

(19:30) In case you, too, cannot pronounce Russian names correctly.

(20:00) Controller breakdown.

(26:30) Melee time!

(27:30) Japan, home of impractical weapon ideas.

(30:00) Speaking of blood oceans: I took some time to do some quick math based on the following assumptions: all of Tokyo is covered in blood, and since we can't see any buildings during the fight, that it covers the tallest building.  This results in 2.8e14 humans worth of blood.  Of course, there might be more than blood, so assuming a largish human average size, that's 1.7e13 full humans in Tokyo.  These are both orders of magnitude greater than the population of earth (~7e9.  You're welcome.

(31:00) Battle Cattle meets The Cowboys of Moo Mesa.

(38:00) On the up n' down.

Episode 114: Escargot Around Every Corner [Alien Storm]

Fight some ugly nosed noble-tier aliens with us this week by... pistol whipping them!  No need to waste ammo, kids.  You'd really think a game with a Tesla Cannon would be cooler.  Because EVO, we talk hit a bunch of fighting games before hitting those aliens, and we wander around mechs for a bit.  In the end, we finally upset our ranking list a fair bit.

Like a bolt of alien lightning, our download shocks straight to the hard drive.

Show Notes

(03:00) Zero's last match at EVO this year.

(05:45) Woshige FTL.

(08:15) They Bleed Pixels!  If you like really hard platformers, this is one for you.  Also, eldritch horrors are adorable.

(12:00) Luffy can't be a thief; he's too busy punching things.

(17:15) Geremy's reactions to Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes.

(24:55) Some sort of aliens.  It's like 3 mediocre games got smashed together!  Arguable the best portion is a side scrolling shooter, which you only get to do once as far as we could tell.

(33:40) Starting the rankings this week with Fire Emblem, followed by Xanac.  Bringing up the rear (but also really not) is Chrono Trigger!

Next time on Last Time, Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Master System!

Episode 69: Robocowboys, Yeehaw! [Wild Guns]

Like every good sci-fi story that takes a look at colonizing other planets (especially dust ol' Mars), the first thing society does is revert back to Old West style land grabs, claim jumpers, and space-rail barons. When the rich decide to use their automated army and a horde of goons to oppress the poor spaceminers, though, it's up to two spacegunslinging space cowboys to take down the entire army armed with nothing but ion lassos and their inexplicably modular guns. Also, some cleavage doesn't hurt.

See you next time, Space Download.

(01:00) Last Time, your FTL podcast.

(03:00) Semi-spoiler: Zach's thoughts on SC2's story.

(04:10) Crusader Kings II is an awesome game for people who don't afraid of spies!  Also, it has a Game of Thrones mod.  I'm sad there are no Oberon/Oberyn mashups.

(09:30) Strike Vector: only vaguely similar to FreeSpace 2, and way harder.

(11:00) Not quite the shipping Geremy was talking about, but I will accept Sailor Venus fighting the Green Ranger to the death on a Street Fighter III stage.  This video is so oddly specific, I have no idea how it exists.  Thanks, M.U.G.E.N.!

(11:30) DEFCON is pretty great, if simple, though it might be Tyler's lack of skill at RTS speaking here.

(14:30) Pot jokes!

(15:00) Talkin' about our LCS league.

(17:30) A rundown of the basic mechanics of Wild Guns.  Points do stuff (100,000 is another life).  Annie loves hitting on the dudes.

(24:00) Apparently, this game is just Cowboy Bebop.  Obviously.

(32:00) Final thoughts: worth a play if it's ever on sale for under $5.

Episode 54: Watch Out For That Space Tree [Space Harrier]

Flying through space with the BFG from Doom sounds like a lot of fun. Unfortunately, vegetation just doesn't seem threatening enough to bother shooting, but you'll probably regret not doing so. Also, cyclopic mammoths. Because, you know, space.

Unlike this game's enemies, you can usually see our download.

(02:00) That Legolas is a pretty cool guy.

(03:30) Geremy's Sneaky Pete adventures.

(05:00) The secret to Broadway.

(08:20) Better names for American sports.

(09:00) Counterfeit Monkey allows you to modify the content of the game while playing.

(09:20) Nevermind: the game that freaks you out when you're freaked out.

(11:30) Geremy talks about A Link Between Worlds.  It has item rental, no ammo, and non-deterministic dungeon order.  Due to the rentals, most of the puzzles are simplistic because they can't guarantee which items you'll have.

(21:30) Zelda, Dynasty Warriors style.

(22:30) Potential PS3 games for Geremy to play.

(23:45) Resi 4 is a totally serious game, guys!

(28:00) Zach's LoL adventures.

(31:00) Also, the Wonder Trade challenge.

(33:30) To the Moon.  It's pretty sweet.

(35:00) We talk about the end of Arkham: Origins.  It's... lackluster.  The part with Bane (or Alfred) seems tacked on, especially with the same flashbacks.

(42:50) Zach's verdict on Space Harrier: "It's awful!"  I don't think anyone's disagreeing.

(43:30) Glitch dragon of yore.

(47:00) We try to decide whether we've played a worse game on the show.

Episode 33: Click click click Instead of Pew pew pew [Pokemon Snap]

It's our first rail shooter, and it's not even a shooter.  Join us on an adventure through a suspiciously multi-environed island as we take pictures of everyone's favorite collectible monsters.  Solve puzzles, see wonders, and pester some Pokemon!

Our download is almost as elusive as Mew!

(01:00)  Video Games Taco is a podcast about some stuff done by some ladies affiliated with some other podcast.

(03:00) Our recent gaming endeavors. Pokemon Pinball: Ruby and Sapphire is remarkably relevant.  The Steam box is new, so we talk about it.  ShinTen is apparently a damn long game.

(05:00) We (mostly Zach) ramble a bit about choices in games.

(12:00) XCOM is still awesome, as is Odin Sphere.

(13:30) Animal Crossing burnout happens quickly.

(17:00) Oh, snap! We discuss our first Pokexperiences.  The card game is super broken.

(21:00) We talk about how the game is scored.

(25:00) This game used to let you print out the pictures you took.  Apparently you can post them from the VC, too.

(26:30) Progression in this game happens by solving obvious, yet strangely satisfying, puzzles.  Most of them result in evolution.  The individual levels are pretty nicely designed and super replayable.  Pikachu rides things.

(29:30) Bulbapedia is like crack for Pokefans.

(34:00) Gluing Pokemon together is a thing.  There's one that's just a sword that becomes two swords.  Geremy likes the way Slowbro gets in the game.

(38:00) Just the right length, apparently.

(41:00) How to improve this game: make it Pixelmon.  Also, make it on the Wii U.

(44:00) There are some silly powered Pokemon.

(45:45) This is mentioned.  Tangentially related to that.
